Operated by Broken Hill based Tri State Safaris tour company, Mutawintji Eco Tours runs small group tours to Mutawintji National Park and to other areas of cultural and ecological significance. Many of these tours are led by accredited Aboriginal guides to provide a more authentic experience.
The tours focus on the local wildlife and plants, bush tucker and bush medicines, with an opportunity to enjoy a number of easy and interesting bushwalks on most of the tours. Their most popular tour is the one day tour to Mutawintji National Park, which includes an interpretive walk through the historic site.

Day 1: The tour’s first destination is the unique “underground society” of White Cliffs. Experience the eerie lunar landscape and spend the night in the famous Underground Motel.
Day 2: Leaving the underground oasis, they head west on remote red dirt outback roads towards Packsaddle Roadhouse. Enjoy a home made morning tea today on the banks of an outback salt lake.

Mutawintji lies within the rugged Byngano Range, with its beautiful gorges and creeks lined with majestic river red gums. Mutawintji means ‘place of green grass and waterholes’. Travel through ever changing landscapes of the Barrier Ranges, salt bush plains, mulga and red sand country.
It is amidst the gorges and cliffs where the secrets of an ancient culture exist. The park reveals rock carvings, paintings and stencils that provide of Aboriginal occupation that dates back more than 8,000 years.
Enjoy two interpretive bush walks to the engravings site and stencils site. Discover the remnants of fire places and stone tool making which gives them an insight into traditional life in the area.
