Sturts Steps Touring Route

National Parks and Reserves

Sturt’s Steps Touring Route is an unsigned route linking Broken Hill with Tibooburra. It follows approximately the route taken by Captain Charles Sturt in 1845 as he led an exploration team into Inland Australia.

The route follows main roads across the region from just north of Broken Hill, across the Barrier Ranges, onto the red sand plain adjacent to the wild dog fence, before linking back to the north east and on to Milparinka. Sturt’s Depot Glen is included on the route.

The route is shown on maps on the Outback NSW website.

Accommodation is available on station properties along the route. Options including camping, shearer’s quarters, B and B, and hotel/motel accommodation in Tibooburra ( or Packsaddle).
