An hours drive north of Canberra, the quiet country town, is a great getaway for a day or the weekend.

In 1824, Hume and Hovell pioneered the famous route, Gunning to Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne, follow their route on the Hume and Hovell Walking Track.

In 1840, the Whitton Gang shot dead Hamilton Hume’s brother John, his grave is in the Gunning Cemetery, and his story is engraved on his tombstone.

Wander around historic stone buildings (circa the 1800s), such as Pye Cottage. Enjoy the town’s shops, cafe’s and local pub.

The quiet wide roads and pretty countryside are perfect for cycling.
