Mount Kembla

Suburb

Mount Kembla is a developing residential area. Kembla is an Aboriginal word meaning “plenty of game”.

Kerosene mining was established in Mount Kembla in the 1860s and operated until 1880, at which point coal mining and the construction of the railway line began.

The Mount Kembla Mining Heritage Festival has become one of the Illawarra’s premier community events in recent years, attracting thousands of local and interstate visitors.
