Nowra

Urban

It was only after drastic floods in the nearby township of Terara in 1870 that Nowra became established in its own right. It is now a popular base for local adventure tour operators, including Shoalhaven Zoo, Nowra Trees Adventures, and Shoalhaven River Cruise.

Nowra has a number of historic buildings and houses dating from the Victorian era. It takes its name from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘camping place’ or ‘black cockatoo’.

Be sure to check out the Fleet Air Arm Museum, which contains a wonderful display of military and civil aircraft.

Also, explore ‘Meroogal’, an historic, timber, gothic-style house with one of the most authentic 19th century interiors in New South Wales.
