Clermont Historical Centre

Galleries, Museums and Collections

The Clermont Historical Centre celebrates the history of Clermont and the Peak Downs, including the ghost towns of Copperfield and Blair Athol, with an emphasis on settler, mining, and pastoral histories.

Displays include the Aveling and Porter steam engine which was used to shift town buildings after the 1916 flood; the sniper Billy Sing’s medals; a violin belonging to Rose Harris, one of the first female saddlers in Australia; and mining machinery used at Blair Athol Coal Mine.

The Clermont Historical Centre reopens on Wednesday 27 March 2024, and presents two new exhibitions: Diary of a Landscape and Clermont Curiosities.

Diary of a Landscape exhibition explores how people interact with and interpret the landscape through objects, maps, drawings, postcards, photos, journals, and other paper-based materials. It is an invitation to think about how people relate to the landscape, and explores what is left behind and what is lost. It contains ongoing collaborative art installations which will continue to develop through the year.

Clermont Curiosities exhibition is about what museums do, and why. It showcases objects that are usually kept in storage, and provides an opportunity to reflect on the history and changing nature of museums today.

Clermont Historical Centre is located on the Gregory Highway approximately 2 kilometres from the town of Clermont, and there is parking available onsite.
The centre closes annually over summer.
