The small town of Leyburn, just under an hour’s drive from either Toowoomba or Warwick, is most known for a motorsport event, the historic Leyburn Sprint. Each August Leyburn’s stately heritage streets roar to life, when thousands come to watch cars race in commemoration of the town hosting the 1949 Australian Grand Prix.
Any time of year you can stop for a beer, a yarn and some real country cooking at the historic Royal Hotel. Built in 1863 this pub is one of Queensland’s oldest pubs. Your heritage trail should include Leyburn School, circa 1862; Leyburn cemetery, St Matthew’s Catholic Church; Liberator Park which has a memorial to ‘Z special unit’ stationed here in World War II and Leyburn airstrip.
Nearby Pratten was once a bustling goldfield. Visitors can still try their luck fossicking at Thane’s Creek fossicking reserve.
