Runaway Bay

Suburb

Escape enthusiasts will adore Runaway Bay and not just for the name. Bracketed by South Stradbroke Island to the east and a colourful canal system to the west, it’s simple to see why this northern Gold Coast suburb was originally better known as Angler’s Paradise. For it’s a fishing feast galore here where you can opt for deep sea reef and game fishing, or select the more sedate option of dropping your line in a calm water estuary.

The waterways around here are known for their local snapper, kingfish, pearl perch, tuna, wahoo or mackerel or if you venture out deeper, you might just bag yourself a marlin or sailfish. In the early 1970s, this parcel of land was transformed into the more upmarket Runaway Bay, but the laid-back vibe remains.

These days, there’s a local marina packed with luxury yachts and cruises and also plenty of options through which to explore the local waterways though houseboat hire. You don’t need the big bucks either as there’s plenty of budget options. Landlubbers will enjoy the Runaway Bay Shopping Centre, while sports enthusiasts will be drawn to the aquatic and sports centres nearby. All up, it sounds like the perfect escape.
