Australian Tapestry Workshop
Things To Do South Melbourne, Port Phillip, Victoria
Unique to Australia, the Australian Tapestry Workshop has built a worldwide reputation for the creation of contemporary tapestries. Over 47 years the ATW has woven over 500 tapestries, which hang in significant public and private collections both nationally and internationally. During this time, their commitment to a collaborative approach has been skillfully developed to the highest professional level and is maintained as a constantly evolving creative process. ATW tapestries are known for their vibrancy and technical accomplishment, as well as their innovative experimental interpretations.
The ATW thrives on working with contemporary artists, designers, and architects who seek to challenge their team of professional weavers and dyers by providing tapestry designs in various mediums including photography, painting, watercolour and digital images.
Visit their two galleries which feature curated exhibitions of tapestries, textiles and contemporary art on a rotating basis. They host an annual artist in residence program, and run workshops and tapestry classes regularly. Guided tours are held on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Visitors to the ATW can observe their professional weavers from the mezzanine and look down into their unique colour laboratory where yarns are custom dyed for production. Their shop stocks ATW’s 365 plus colour range of in-house dyed Australian woollen yarn, weaving supplies, and tapestry tools.
