Elverd Cottage

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Visit the quaint 1850s Elverd Cottage to learn about the farming town of Kojonup and its history as a British Military outpost in the 1800s. Examine the farm machinery and blacksmith’s shop housing a comprehensive harness display, horse drawn vehicles and early machinery, stroll around the magnificent cottage gardens and explore the cottage to see how the prison guards would have lived.

Home to J.C. Elverd, who was one of the British soldiers enticed to the town with the offer of GBP15 and ten acres of land, the cottage has been beautifully restored. Known as the Pensioner Guards who watched over convicts from Britain, the cottage is one of only a few Pensioner Guards homes still remaining.

Elverd Cottage forms part of the Kojonup Historical Town Walk which includes an amazing 52 significant sites around the town. Visit the Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, the Noongar Sharpening Rock and the oldest continually licensed hotel in Western Australia, Commercial Hotel. Take a day to leisurely explore the town and its interesting past. Kojonup is three hours drive south of Perth.
