The Hermitage

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

The Hermitage is a charming historical building in Geraldton that was one of many designed by prominent architect and priest Monsignor John Hawes. This building held special significance to Monsignor Hawes as it was designed as his retirement house. Whilst the house is currently not open to the public, the building itself is extremely photogenic from the outside.

Collect a map of the Monsignor Hawes Heritage Trail from the Geraldton Visitors Centre and discover several fascinating historic buildings including the magnificent St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Nazareth House and the Cemetery Chapel of The Holy Spirit. Whilst on foot explore the charming city of Geraldton and conclude your walking tour with a refreshing dip in the Indian Ocean.

Stay in Geraldton for a couple of days and take advantage of the coastal city’s proximity to the well-preserved historical settlement of Greenough. Then hit the ocean and explore the spectacular archipelago of the Houtman Abrolhos Islands where snorkelling and fishing are highly recommended.

Geraldton is a four-hour drive north of Perth.
