Kulin

Urban

Kulin’s quirky Tin Horse Highway, colourful carpets of spring wildflowers and breathtaking Wheatbelt vistas make it a must-do detour on the road trip from Perth to Wave Rock or Esperance. Take a photo stop to capture the character of the local tin horse sculptures and a picnic break at picturesque Jilakin Rock.

Driving east from Perth, you’ll arrive in the epic pastoral and salt lake landscapes surrounding Kulin in just over three and a half hours – perfect for a half-way stop on the journey to the south coast or a minor detour on the way to Wave Rock.

During the months of August and September, Kulin’s many nature reserves showcase thousands of dazzling floral species, many of which are unique to Western Australia. Design your own flora-filled self-drive adventure, visiting the wildflower hotspots of Hopkins, North Jitarning and Dragon Rocks nature reserve. Each offers unique habitats to explore and the chance to picnic beside the blooms.

Take the 20 minute drive east to Jilakin Rock and you’ll find more floral delights and shady picnic spots at the base of this spectacular monolith, not to mention sweeping salt lake and Wheatbelt vistas from the summit. Here, over 150 kilometres from the main tract of jarrah forest, the most isolated stand of jarrah trees thrive on water run-off and rich soils at the base of the rock.

Every October, Jilakin Rock draws a huge crowd to the famous Kulin Bush Races for a weekend of racing fun, live music and country hospitality.

Further east on the road to Wave Rock, another curious rock formation known as Buckley’s Breakaway offers a unique photo opportunity. Its pinkish-white sculptured rocks are a striking contrast against the red-brown gravel caps and you’re likely to find something in flower here all-year round.

In the five-star tidy town of Kulin, you’ll find some lovingly restored historic architecture and modern accommodation options at the Kulin Hotel. Budget-friendly options are available at the caravan park, or for some authentic country living, book into a local farmstay.
