Calthorpes’ House

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Visit Calthorpes’ House and step back to life in early Canberra. Not far from the city centre, the Spanish Mission Style house was built in 1927 and is a window into an almost forgotten world. This genuine survivor is a treasure house of domestic history. Original furnishings, household appliances and photos all tell a vivid story of family life in Canberra’s early days.

Don’t miss the Second World War bomb shelter in the backyard.

In 2017 Calthorpes’ House’s is turning 90 and are celebrating with extended hours. Check their website for the full range of programs on offer during this time.
