Angus Trumble is former Director of the National Portrait Gallery, and a former Senior Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut.
For a “movement,” such as it was, so small, so brief and with such youthful adherents, each as different from each other as it was almost possible to be, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) has enjoyed a quite remarkably disproportionate critical fate through the past exactly 170 years. It is as if, among succeeding generations, there has been some pressing need for a bellwether PRB, one that has at different times sat as comfortably in the Royal Academy and the Athenaeum as it later sauntered down Carnaby Street.
