Broads at Belco exhibition by Belinda Allen, Lee Bethel, Elizabeth Borghero, Caroline Corby, Sonja Karl, Sam Newstead, Leanne Thompson & Kerry Toomey.
The aim of the Collective is to present work of women artists, striving to strengthen professional attitudes and women’s representation in the arts. The Broad Collective adds to and expands the notion of visually understanding the landscape. Landscape is not contained to the traditional canvas or the bold vista and women have stepped off the verandah and onto the land.
From manipulating the fold, the grid and the seed to the use of culturally significant materials to clay, cloth, wax and stick the diversity of each artists practice shares a connectedness with nature and with its impermanence. Within the Broad Collective we have a Kamilaroi woman with strong, immediate connections to her Piliga birthplace; and women who left their birth place as adults to migrate to Australia, others whose families made the migration decision and those who trace their arrival from colonial days.
Our general theme is a sense of place and human interaction and its effects in the broader context of land, landscape and environment. Exploring the history and significance of the landscape while reconnecting with place and questioning our position within it, the group views the landscape and environmental issues through a female lens.
