Art Music on Stage.
Begin with Karel Husa’s Apotheosis of this Earth. In four movements, this mammoth work articulates the composer’s activism on the ‘desperate’ state of the world, touching on war, hunger and environmental factors. This work tells its story with suspenseful tensions and building textures, which range from the tittering of little birds through to full-ensemble forest fires that will set the room alight.
Two heavenly works bring together the prosperous and healing spirit of the Emerald stone: David Maslanka’s Angel of Mercy and James Swearingen’s And the Angels Called. These works utilise angelic brass fanfares and lush lyrical lines to bring heavenly beauty into the concert hall to stand next to Husa’s dramatic interpretation.
Samuel R. Hazo’s Exultate – at breakneck speed – captures the vibrancy and energy associated with the emerald hue.
This program delivers textures spanning the full range of the dynamics of the wind ensemble. Miss it, and you’ll be green with envy.
