The Australian National Flag is a symbol of the entire nation and this display takes you through its fascinating history.
The Australian Flag, then known as the Commonwealth Blue Ensign, was flown for the first time on 3 September 1901 – a date commemorated each year as Australian National Flag Day.
Not until 1953 did the Blue Ensign officially become Australia’s national flag. The Flags Act 1953 (Cth) was signed into law by Queen Elizabeth II on 14 February 1954 – one of a very few Australian laws to receive Assent from the Monarch rather than the Governor-General.
