‘Saints and Sinners’ is a musical peregrination traversing several centuries, through holy fire, depictions of ardent courtly love, and expositions of more frankly secular avocations. The journey culminates in a glorious late-Renaissance conjunction of the sacred and the profane with Bonifazio Graziani’s stunningly beautiful Missa Il Dolce e Bianco Cigno, preceded by Jacques Arcadelt’s madrigal Il bianco e dolce cigno, from which Graziani took his inspiration.
When listening to the glorious sacred music of the Renaissance, it is tempting to picture its creation by a succession of venerable hermits who, eschewing the vanities of secular life, dedicated their creative energies to the glory of God. And yet, the nexus between sacred and profane is far closer than one might believe.
I Progetti was recently formed by founder and Artistic Director Charis Messalina de Valence as a small chamber choir dedicated to fine singing and the exploration of new, unfamiliar, and infrequently performed choral repertoire, presenting concerts developed thematically or by period, composer, or genre.
Duration 60 minutes.
