Quantz & Friends

Concert or Performance

12 Oct 2018

“Hearing these celebrated people, I was profoundly impressed … I sought in time to put myself in a position to become a member of so excellent a society.” Quantz, 1752

Johann Joachim Quantz’s desire to become more than a “town musician” led him to undertake a three-year Grand Tour of Europe, generously funded by the King of Poland. Quantz formed many friendships and absorbed a great deal, writing that “In every place …I had stopped I had composed something, imitating the style prevalent there.” Despite his new-found fame, however, Quantz was kept firmly in his place by Frederick the Great who wrote to his sister Wilhelmina, “You will find Quantz’s high opinion of himself the more insupportable in that it is really without foundation.”

Salut! presents a concert of baroque music with works by Quantz, Gasparini, Hasse, Heinichen and Handel
