Treasures Gallery

Exhibition and Shows

25 Apr 2018 to 31 Jan 2019

Experience some of the nation’s most precious treasures and stories in this permanent exhibition at the National Library. Recently refreshed with over 40 new objects, in the gallery you’ll find Australia’s first gold medal for women’s swimming, won by Fanny Durack in 1912, poet Henry Lawson’s fobwatch and pen, and the handwritten journals of Burke and Wills.

Other stunning treasures include a very early example of Australian designed jewellery, a beautiful 1850s gold brooch donated by Lady Katherine Darwin who inherited it from her grandmother Fanny Richardson, the first Chinese-English phrasebook from the early days of Chinese settlement in Australia, and one of the rarest maps in the world, the recently restored Blaeu Map, which has been extended on display for a limited time.
