For those in the know, Canberra is a mecca for mid-century architecture, and our modernist masterpieces could be a tourist magnet, drawing on our city’s distinct design identity. However, many of these buildings need investment and contemporary reimagining.
The Civic and Cultural Precinct proposal (located around Civic Square and the Canberra Theatre) will create a cosmopolitan heart for our nation’s capital. The precinct proposal has a contemporary vision yet resonates with Canberra’s design history from the 1912 Griffin plan to mid-century national capital ambition and investment.
Join our panel of thought leaders to explore and identify future solutions:
Kate Brennan, cultural planner and strategist
Annabelle Pegrum, architect and academic.
About Two Minutes to Midnight
DESIGN Canberra’s new Two Minutes to Midnight series invites designers and thought-leaders to engage in deeper conversations with the community about the spaces, places and values we need in order to survive and thrive. 2020 represents a time of rapid change in our city and nation’s history. In this time of uncertainty, is good design an unaffordable luxury or the best possible use of public money?
