Miners Memorial Statue

Agri, Mining and Industry

Coal has been mined in the Gunnedah Shire for more than 130 years, first for local use then later for export. Several mines are in operation within the Shire as the Gunnedah basin has vast reserves of high‐quality coal.

The Miners Statue is the work of well known Sculpture Carl Merten. It was erected in memory of those who have lost their lives in the Gunnedah Coal mines and also to remind the town of several lengthy strikes that took place in the underground mines that have long since closed. The Statue is located in Brock’s Court in Wolseley Park on Conadilly Street, just across from the Town Hall.
