Montreal Goldfield near Bermagui is an amazingly intact example of alluvial diggings in the 1880s and the only goldfield in Australia that goes into the sea. A guided tour through the goldfield is a unique experience for all ages and one not be missed.
Trained guides tell you the story of the Montreal Goldfield and the Great Unsolved Bermagui Mystery as you wander along 300 metres of pathways and boardwalks through the beautiful natural bush covering the diggings today. All shafts are fenced off or covered so you can look down at them in safety. It is peaceful and relaxing, a far cry from the gold rush era’s chaotic days and offers full mobility access.
Entry is by guided tour only. Tours leave from the onsite Heritage Centre at 2 pm daily and take just over an hour. Bookings for groups of 10 or more are preferred.

Two hectares of the old goldfield have been wonderfully preserved and made safe for public access. There is approximately 300 metres of boardwalks and compacted pathways, which is 60 per cent wheelchair accessible. Meander through the beautiful tree ferns and established bloodwood forest.
Admission is by guided tour only, to satisfy insurance requirements and so the guides can tell the Montreal story: A story of history, mystery and fascinating anecdotes of times gone by.
Tours depart daily at 2pm from site on Wallaga Lake Road, seven kilometres north of Bermagui, next door to the Wallaga Lake Caravan Park.
