Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club – Sailing Academy
Things To Do Wickham, Newcastle, New South Wales
Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is located at Wickham on the shores of the Port of Newcastle, NSW. The Club’s precinct is a waterfront stroll from the city and includes a sailing academy, marina, cafes, restaurants and licensed clubhouse.
The active Sailing Academy offers a wide range of learn-to-sail courses and fun sailing experiences for both children and adults. As an “Australian Sailing” accredited centre, you can be assured of skilled instructors and a high standard of delivery.
Aboard their fleet of six 24′ inshore keelboats or 12 Tackers dinghies for kids, they aim to offer you an experience and view of Newcastle like no other. Courses range in length from a quick two-hour Friday Twilight sail, to a three-hour ‘taste’ of weekend sailing, to a regular four-session course or a week-long school holiday program.
The Courses and Experiences include: “Discover Sailing” Experiences, Women’s Sailing courses, “Tackers” kids learn to sail programs, “OutThereSailing” for adventurous teens, Friday Twilight Sailing, and Start Crewing keelboat courses.
Given the wonderful location and vista of Newcastle Harbour, the Academy instructors aim to give every participant an experience they will thoroughly enjoy and long remember.
With an objective of developing and promoting sailing in Newcastle, the club is focused on maintaining its welcoming approach and hospitable charm to both “old salts” and those new to sailing.
Want to “try” sailing to see how you like it?
Always been curious about sailing but never knew how to get onboard?
Come along to the NCYC Sailing Academy for one of their “Discover Sailing Experiences” which provides that opportunity to get out on the water to see what it’s like!
Their experienced sailing instructors will take you onboard one of the 24′ inshore keelboats to “give you a taste” of what sailing is all about. You will spend the morning learning basic sailing skills, terminology and boat handling manoeuvres.
Five people onboard – one instructor and four participants.
Enjoy the unique opportunity to spend some time on beautiful Newcastle Harbour and see the city from a different perspective! This might just whet your appetite to join them for one of their Learn to Sail courses. All you need is comfortable active clothing, an enclosed pair of shoes and a hat.

Get the kids outdoors and on-water doing something fun with the super-popular Tackers learn-to-sail courses.
The Tackers program offers children, in a general age range of seven-twelve years, sequential sailing skill and knowledge development through three main courses/levels:
Tackers One – Having Fun!
Tackers Two – Tricks and Techniques!
Tackers Three – Sailing Fast!
The program has been specifically designed to keep children engaged with short but interesting activities where kids have fun whilst learning fundamental sailing skills and habits without even noticing!
The Sailing Academy cater for absolute beginners and provide the progressive syllabus to lead the children to achieve full confidence on the water, eventually skippering a dinghy themselves.
Both school holiday programs and weekly term-based courses are available. Active Kids vouchers can be accepted.
The Tackers courses are part of a nationally delivered program from Australian Sailing and the instructors and assistant instructors are fully qualified and endorsed. NCYC supply the sailing dinghies and equipment as well as a life jacket for each student. Kids just need to wear swimmers, boardshorts, rash shirts and enclosed wet-shoes/old sandshoes.
The Tackers courses are very popular and always sell out. Visit the website for a full list of upcoming courses.
