Discover the underground at Wellington Caves. Take a guided tour through Cathedral Cave and Thunder Cave, Gaden Cave and the exquisite Fossil and Phosphate Mine. Be amazed by 15m tall alter of crystal formations, intricate cave corals, 400-million-year-old marine fossils and 1-million-year-old megafauna fossils.

Become a paleontologist for the day and examine ancient fossils in the Discovery Lab. Inspect Australian megafauna through a lens and get a magnified insight just like a palaeontologist. The Discovery Lab has all of the tools for fossil finding, so dig in and see what you discover!

The Caves Visitor Experience Centre features a cafe and the new Ancient Landscapes Gallery. Here you can interact with ancient marine creatures, stand next to life-sized Diprotodon and uncover the local Wiradjuri stories of the caves.

The Cathedral Cave and Gaden Cave do not have wheelchair access. However, the Phosphate Mine is wheelchair and stroller accessible. All tours are approximately one hour in duration. Enclosed shoes must be worn in the mine and are recommended for the Cathedral and Gaden Cave.

Formed over millions of years, this limestone cave showcases an inspiring limestone and crystal formation reaching a staggering 15 metres in height. As you wonder at its extraordinary features you will also see hints of marine life from 400 million years ago. Here you may even catch a glimpse of a dig where today’s palaeontologists are searching for ancient answers.

Pre-booking is highly recommended; however, tickets can be purchased in store if available.

Medium level of fitness required, 300 stairs in total. Enclosed footwear is essential, hard hats are provided and must be worn.

The smallest of the three caves, Gaden displays a showcase of dazzling formations of stalagmites, stalactites and unique coral-like formations. The complexity within this chamber results in a diverse display of crystal formations to wonder and amaze. A word of warning though this amazing cave can be impacted by the external environment so please plan ahead and ensure the Gaden cave is open.

Pre-booking is highly recommended; however, tickets can be purchased in store if available.

Medium level of fitness required, 240 stairs in total.

Hard hats provided must be worn, enclosed shoes are essential.

Embedded in the rock walls are thousands of fossil and bone deposits dating back over one million years. A paleontologist’s wonderland with mammal fossils from extinct worlds, one of the reasons for the international significance. Encountering these caves via a restored WW1 mine shaft offers insight into the discovery of natural resources in the early twentieth century.

Low level of fitness required. Wheelchair and pram accessible. Enclosed footwear is essential and hard hats provided must be worn.

Step into a scientific lab and examine fossils from one million years ago. Learn about Australian Megafauna through a lens and get a magnified insight just like a palaeontologist. The Discovery Lab has all of the tools of the trade for fossil finding, so dig in and see what you discover! Suitable for the young and young at heart!

The Ancient Landscapes Gallery is a window into the past spanning 400 million years. Come along and explore ancient seas, interact with life-sized Australian Megafauna, learn about traditional Wellington Wiradjuri stories and discover what scientists are still studying on site today. Free within the Visitor Experience Centre.

Once above ground make time to explore our Fossil Trail.

This winding path will take you on a course of discovery, survey for fossils 400 million years in the making or watch for the native fauna and flora moving across the Catombal Ranges. Your above ground quest doesn’t end there, continue on to uncover the entrance to the Anticline Cave located in the centre of the Caravan Park. Whilst visitors cannot explore this cave, the amazing folds and formations can be seen from the surface and those with a keen eye may be able to see the water table at the bottom of the cave.
