A Camera on Gallipoli showcases the photographs of Sir Charles Ryan and features some of the most graphic and important photographic images from the Gallipoli campaign, including the famous image from the May truce.
A leading surgeon and senior medical officer, Ryan had access to the highest levels of command on Anzac while retaining an interest in the ordinary soldier and a genuine regard for the enemy. His remarkable images of Australian soldiers capture the mateship, stoicism and dogged persistence that became the spirit of Anzac.
This display has been developed by the Australian War Memorial with the support of the Australian Government’s Commemorations Program.
