Concert or Performance

Tamara Murphy: as well as being a hard-touring bass player for names like Bernie McGann, Christine Anu and Grace Knight, Murphy is a composer of renown. The versatile Melbourne-based bassist and composer won the inaugural PBS Young Elder of Jazz Commission, was twice nominated for The Age Genre Music Awards and the Australian Jazz Bell Award that year.

Gemma Farrell (WA) is leading saxophonist, composer and educator on the Perth scene, lecturing at WAAPA, and working as the assistant musical director of the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra. After a long-stint in Europe, where she earned a Master of Music at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam, Farrell returned to Australia, a force majeure. Farrell’s solo work is bright and soulful, phrasing traditional elements of jazz like lyrical, melodic solos against a swinging rhythm section. Farrell’s work as a musician represents a rich tradition in jazz, and her work as an educator empowers and supports young women to become players.
