Sydney Highland Gathering is an annual event hosted by The Scots College. All the community is invited: families and children of all ages, people who love Scottish culture, people who are looking for an enjoyable day out, those who love pipes and drums and highland dancing. Try haggis (of the square variety) and market stalls.
Sensational spectator events include:
The Atlas Stones: This event comprises five increasingly large stones, ranging in weight from 100 to 156kg. They are lifted in order of lightest to heaviest, on top of a wooden barrel. Each barrel is placed five metres apart and the person who can lift the most stones in the shortest amount of time is the winner.
Weight for Height: This is a traditional Scottish Highland Games event where a box weight, weighing 56lbs is tossed up, over a bar that is progressively raised until all competitors have been eliminated. Each competitor has three attempts to clear each height.
The Caber Toss: The Caber (a long, large pole, a bit like a javelin) is typically 5.9m tall and 79kg. The objective is to toss the caber so that it turns end-over-end, falling away from the tosser in the 12 o’clock position.
