The English writer DH Lawrence lived in Thirroul in 1922 and wrote much of his Australian novel Kangaroo here. Wyewurk, the home he lived in, is now privately owned, however a park at the end of Craig Street offers a glimpse of the views Lawrence enjoyed.
The town maintains a proud cultural heritage and has a lively arts community.
But the most compelling reason to visit Thirroul is its wonderful beach: a sweep of golden sand backed by a large grassy park with a children’s play area. It is close to crafty shops and delightful cafes.
Be sure to pedal the Wollongong Cycleway, a purpose-built track parallel to the ocean that passes through Thirroul. Nearby Stanwell Park and Dapto are worth a visit.
