Finke River Cultural Tours is 100% aboriginal owned and operated. They offer an authentic Aboriginal Cultural experience, with local elders and members of Ntaria (Hermannsburg). Their tours and cultural experiences start in the beautiful historical community of Ntaria (Hermannsburg) known by locals as Ntaria.

The beautiful trail is seen along the drive from Alice Springs to Ntaria where you will also see the amazing greenery a touch of different from other parts of the Northern Territory. You may see the occasional kangaroos, lizards, wedge tailed eagles, dingos and many more.

Come and enjoy a half day experience at the Hermannsburg potters, see how these nationally recognized artists work with their hands to tell their story and make some beautifully crafted pieces of art.

After spending 1.5 hours at the Hermannsburg Potters, it’s off to the Hermannsburg Historic Precinct, immerse yourself in the rich history that sits on the banks of the mighty Finke River which is known to be world’s number one oldest river that dates back to 350 million to 400 million years old. Learn what it was like to live in 1876 and how the missionaries helped the Western Arrernte people from the community it is today.

Once the tour is complete enjoy a cold drink, coffee and the world-famous Hermannsburg Strudels.

Start at the Hermannsburg Historic Precinct, that sits on the mighty Finke River which is known as number 1 world’s oldest river at 350 million or 400 million years old and is by 50 million years ahead of the rest of the 9 world oldest river, where you will be guided by an Indigenous tour guide and learn what it was like to live in 1876 and how the missionaries helped the Western Arrernte people form the community it is today.

You will be taken out to Rodna by an Aboriginal guide through alongside the Mighty Finke River until you see the beautiful mountain scenery and desert waterholes for a swim. You’ll see and learn about the Rodna Waterhole and Itopalkara, which is known as the dog’s back bone.

Explore the mighty Lirra Pinta (Finke River) and be mesmerised by the Nthipa, dancing ladies, rock formation. The tour is a full day that takes you through 4WD tracks that are off the beaten track to go deeper into the region where you will learn of the dreamtime stories and be able to get your feet wet and have a swim in the Finke River before returning to Alice Springs.

Arrive at Ntaria (Hermannsburg) community and meet at Ntaria (Hermannsburg) supermarket carpark, then you will head off to the special site of Kaporilya springs and listen to Indigenous tour guides. You will hear all about the rain dreaming story for this special site, as well as hear why the Western Arrernte people celebrate on the first Sunday in October, Kaporilya day where the people of Ntaria (Hermannsburg) remember the completion of the pipeline which provided the mission with a secure water supply.

You will then visit the residence of world-famous Albert Namatjira, where he grew up and found his love for art.

The last stop will be the Hermannsburg Historic Precinct that sits on the mighty Finke River believed to be the world’s oldest river dating back over 350 million years. You will learn what it was like to live in 1876 and how the missionaries helped the Western Arrernte people form the community it is today.
