Tarntipi Bush Camp

Cultural and Theme Tours

Tarntipi Bush Camp is a unique experience for people seeking an authentic cultural experience in a remote location of north Australia.

For over ten years, Tarntipi has developed an inter-cultural space where locals and visitors to the Tiwi Islands are able to experience Tiwi way: on country, with family. The place and the people set the background for this product and offer the visitor an unforgettable journey which is a highly engaging and educative experience. This experience has been designed in close and ongoing consultation with Tiwi eldership.

Itineraries range in length from half-day sightseeing tours to extended 3 day tours. Tarntipi Bush Camp is about fostering authentic and genuine inter-cultural relationships. It is also about building Aboriginal self-determination and promoting Tiwi culture and cultural awareness through an authentic and participatory camping experience. Tiwi families enjoy sharing with visitors the experience of being on country Tiwi way.

A three day/two night introduction to Tiwi culture camping at Tarntipi Bush Camp. The Tiwi Islands are close to Darwin – either a flight (30 minutes) or ferry (2.5 hours). Visitors arrange their own transfers to and from the island. The tour begins at the pickup point on the island. The camp is located about 15 minutes from the township of Wurrumiyanga.

The camp setting is ideally located on Bathurst Island close to a beautiful beach and easy walk to a freshwater spring. Over the time on the island participants have the opportunity to visit local agencies such as the Museum and Art Galleries.

Experiences on country are the most effective way of engaging with Tiwi culture. Our cultural educators ask you to walk beside them. This means being receptive to the learning that occurs through day to day activities. Culture is intertwined in the routines of daily life. The program has been intentionally structured to be delivered to small groups.

The use of mobile phones is restricted to emergency use only. Communications with the outside world may not be available at any given time at camp.
