Ivan Danks Day

Concert or Performance

21 Aug 2022 Annual Event

Gove Boat Club is rebooting a tradition – Ivan Danks Day – a day of hilarity and energy where competitors build a boat from supplied materials and sail/row/sink it in a race around a short course. This event celebrates our local history and combines it with the sport of sailing.

They have lots of fun activities organized, including live music and stalls, it promises to be a great family day. The event encompasses their community spirit with the collaboration of many people and organisations.

Ivan Danks was a serviceman based at the nearby Catalina army base. As it turned out, Ivan was the first man to sail a yacht on Gove Harbour. During the construction of his yacht, many things went missing mysteriously. The sails were strangely the same colour as a tent that went missing from the Q shore. Ivan was also seen gathering fastenings from a burning boat.

This historic story inspired a former club manager to start an annual family event, that ran for many years. One year Ivan Danks himself flew here for the event, then in his nineties. The old chap was absolutely elated. Unfortunately, Ivan passed away soon after.

Gove Boat Club is looking forward to bringing this tradition back to life and sharing this story with their members, sailors, campers, visitors and supporters.
