Following recent collaborations in the UK and with the West Australian Ballet Company, Gary Lang’s NT Dance Company premiere their latest creative work, Forbidden.
This remarkable collaborative production will take you on one man’s journey through hardship, peer pressure and conformity, as he navigates a world that forbids him from openly expressing his darkest emotions. Experience the emotional reactions of an uncontrollable spiral of events stemming from this man’s encounter with adversity.
Broken into four periods of time, throughout each stage the dancers represent a different level of healing, torn between their competing emotions and community expectation. As the journey to recovery unfolds, the dancers explosively express loss and the darkest moments where aggression, despair, and resentment lead to feelings of self-harm and suicide. Because the triumph of healing and the curing of a broken spirit has broad universal appeal, this latest Australian masterpiece by Gary Lang is not to be missed.
Forbidden is a cross cultural, cross border collaboration between NT Dance Company, NAISDA dance College Australia’s foremost First Nations dance performing arts training organisation and Yolngu East Arnhem Land’s Miku Performing Arts.
It is supported by NAISDA, the Darwin Entertainment Centre, the Federal Government’s RISE Initiative, West Australian Ballet, ArtsNT, the Australia Council for Arts, the Regional Arts Fund and Bendigo Bank.
