Tropical Sportfisher is a sports fishing charter running out of Cairns, Port Douglas and Mission Beach. Specialising in lure and fly fishing also conducting nature and wilderness cruises.
They run private charters only with a maximum of two passengers. Their boat is a 4.8 metre purpose built vessel capable of heading out to the inshore islands if the weather permits.
They generally fish the many river systems between Port Douglas, Cairns and Mission Beach targeting barramundi, mangrove jack and other tropical species.
They also do guided fishing in Lake Tinaroo for barramundi. A unique tour option with them is trekking the fresh water reaches of their river systems acting jungle perch, very similar to trout fishing in the southern states.
They do hotel pick ups and drop offs, full and half day tours, provided lunch/snacks and drinks. All quality fishing gear and tackle supplied as they as a local experienced guide.

Lure and fly fishing in the rivers and estuarys around Tropical North Queensland, targeting a range of tropical native fish species including barramundi, mangrove jack.

Hiking upstream in the freshwater streams and mountain river systems fishing for jungle perch and sooty grunter. Very similar to trout fishing in the southern states except your wearing board shorts in the tropics.

This is for the nature lovers, keen photographers or anyone looking to explore the back country of the local river systems.
Taking passengers on their 4.8 metre boat up stream in silence under power of an electric motor so we don’t disturb the peace. Spotting saltwater crocs, birdlife and many other creatures along the river banks.
Having a smaller vessel allows them to go where other boats can’t get to. There are multiple different rivers and estuary systems where they conduct this tour.
Lunch, snacks and drinks are provided. Hotel pick up and drop off. Two person maximum for personal guided experience.

Fly fishing in the far north varies from chasing jungle perch in the mountains to site casting on the flats on a tropical island.
For the southern trout anglers chasing jungle perch and sooty grunter in a rainforest environment is a great way to escape the cold.
The rivers/estuary systems can provide plenty of fun with barramundi and mangrove jack, with plenty of surface bites. If the weather permits you’ll be on the flats with a range of species to site cast including permit, tusk fish and trevally.
The giant barramundi in Lake Tinaroo can also be caught on fly.

Fishing around tropical island reefs, Popping for GT’s, jig wrecks and headlands. Providing the weather is good there’s plenty of light tackle options. Tuna, Maceral and other pelagics frequent the inshore islands and Isolated reef and rubble marks produce a range of tasty reef species including, Fingermark, Coral tout and Nannigai.

Tinaroo is a stocked impoundment in the Cairns hinterland just over an hours drive from the Central Business District. It’s home to some of the biggest Barramundi in the country. It is renowned for many world record captures, the Lake is stocked annually. Generally in the warmer months (September through to May) the barra are more active and easier to catch. These fish can be targeted on lure or fly around dusk and dawn, and around full moon the fish are more predictable and easier to catch.
