Internationally renowned and touring artwork Gaia by UK artist Luke Jerram will make its Australian East Coast premiere this October.
Luke’s stunning installation captures the beauty and fragility of planet Earth. In a time where people are overwhelmed, this captivating artwork creates a welcoming and gentle space.
Stop by during the day and see the sculpture floating atop a makeshift lake, basking in the sunlight. Or visit in the early evening as the Earth glows, rest on the lawn under the stars and take a moment for reflection.
A companion installation to Luke’s work Museum of the Moon, seen on the Gold Coast during Festival 2018, Gaia is a seven-metre wide detailed replica of the Earth as viewed from space, which will be suspended from their Outdoor Stage.
Gaia, the Greek personification for ‘Mother Earth’, presents an opportunity for what’s known as an ‘Overview Effect’, the experience astronauts feel when first seeing the Earth from outer space. You’ll share their experience of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment and each other.
The self-rotating sculpture will be suspended from the Outdoor Stage against the backdrop of the Gold Coast skyline and will be experienced with a specially made composition by BAFTA Award-winning composer Dan Jones.
