Join three of Australia’s most cherished chamber musicians in this special one-off concert on June 11. Violinist Natsuko Yoshimoto, cellist Umberto Clerici, and pianist Daniel de Borah will present three indelible works that will leave audiences feeling both reflective and invigorated.
Kodály’s beloved Duo for Violin and Cello is a perfect fusion of classical form with folk melodies and rhythm, unfolding like a story or poem. Cherished for its heart on sleeve quality and epic sweep, it demands of its performers bravura playing.
Matching Kodály’s fervour is Mendelssohn’s Sonata for Cello and Piano No 2, a passionate work that overflows with feelings of merriment and exultation. It effortlessly combines Classical symmetrical phrasing with Romantic pathos, the cello and piano locked in a virtuosic duet.
The program is rounded off by Mozart’s Violin Sonata in E Minor, the only violin sonata by the composer to be written in a minor key. Suffused with a sense of wistfulness that often tips into quiet grief, it is both grave and dignified.
