25 Apr 2021 Annual Event
You may be aware of the famous cricket match image taken at Gallipoli on 17 December 1915, a site now known as ‘Shell Green’. This image has become an integral part of a special Brisbane ANZAC Day commemoration.
The Shell Green T20 Cricket Match, held at Brookfield Showgrounds, has developed into a large community event and this year’s event marks the ten-year anniversary of the first meeting between Brigadier Jason Blain’s Army XI and Lord Mayor’s Brookfield United Cricket Club XI.
The morning commences at 10am on ANZAC Day with a service and, following a brief intermission, the pre-game traditions will be performed.
This day has evolved into an important ‘rite of passage’ for emerging army players with participants awarded a ‘Baggy Shell Green’. The shield is awarded to the captain of the winning team by Brisbane’s Lord Mayor and ‘Best on Field’ or ‘Corporal Mathew Hopkins Player of the Match Award’, is presented by a member of the Hopkins family.
The event is proudly supported by Queensland Cricket, Queensland Cricketers’ Club, Donaldson Law and Brisbane City Council.
