The Golden Boat Chinese Restaurant was established in March 2005 and is locally owned and operated by one of Cairns’ most experienced and renowned Chinese Chefs, Ken Deng. Ken migrated to Australia with his family in 1989. His father was a famous Yum Cha chef in Guangzhou and Ken followed his footsteps, starting his career as a Yum Cha chef trainee at a very popular Chinese restaurant in Melbourne’s Chinatown. After three years of distinct and hard training, Ken moved to Adelaide to learn Yum Cha techniques and styles from his father. At 21 years of age, he became the youngest ever qualified Yum Cha Chef in Australia. At that time, he was the only qualified Yum Cha chef working north of Brisbane.
