Mackay is a relaxed tropical city with a cosmopolitan mix of art, architecture and nature. Mackay’s recently revitalised city centre has seamlessly linked central businesses with the attractive Bluewater Quay riverside precinct. At the intersection of Wood and Victoria Streets is Cane Fire, an interactive sculpture which, at night, produces swirling effects of colour, light and mist; controllable by visitors using a mobile phone.
Mackay boasts one of the best art scenes in Queensland, with the award-winning Artspace Gallery, as well as one of Australia’s most prominent public art displays along the Bluewater Trail.
The Bluewater Trail is a shared bicycle and pedestrian path which links a variety of Mackay City’s attractions, including the Mackay Regional Botanical Gardens, Town Beach and the Bluewater Lagoon, a three-tiered swimming haven. Mackay’s largest shopping mall can also be found along the Bluewater Trail, lined with riverside cafes and restaurants.
The city centre is a blend of architectural styles, including the unique Art Deco style façades which are prominent throughout. A guided heritage walk through the Mackay City Centre is available seasonally, information can be obtained from the Mackay Visitor Information Centre on Nebo Road, otherwise a brochure is available for a self-guided option. The city centre underwent a million dollar refurbishment in 2015.
Beautiful beaches, pretty parks and the modern marina are all within minutes from Mackay’s city centre.
A range of accommodation exists within the Central Business District, many of which are ideally located within close proximity of Mackay’s vivacious city attractions.
