At the intersection of Wood and Victoria Streets is Cane Fire, an interactive sculpture which, at night, produces swirling effects of colour, light and mist; controllable by visitors using a mobile phone.

The city centre is a blend of architectural styles, including the unique Art Deco style façades which are prominent throughout. A guided heritage walk through the Mackay City Centre is available seasonally, information can be obtained from the Mackay Visitor Information Centre on Nebo Road, otherwise a brochure is available for a self-guided option. The city centre underwent a million dollar refurbishment in 2015.
