The Yura Udnyu walking tour (“yura” being the name for Adnyamathanha people and “udnyu” meaning white) to Old Wilpena Station and the Ikara monument, covers the intertwining histories of both cultures. Learn about the diversity of the land, native animals, native bush-tucker, and uncover the rich history and mystique of ancient and contemporary Aboriginal culture.

On the half day 4WD tour, explore the gorges around Wilpena Pound which provide an ancient and fascinating history of the Flinders Ranges, and are visible in the fossil layers. Marveling at the rugged beauty of Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges. Learn about Adnyamathanha Dreaming, which is still very strong in traditional Yarta (land).

Each night, a Yura traditional owner welcomes visitors to Wilpena Pound Resort and the Flinders Ranges, speaking in Yura Ngawarla, the language of the Adnyamathanha people, and telling stories of the creation of Ikara.

As you pass through the station gate you will step back 150 years to the early days of the pastoral runs. Explore a world of improvisation, dogged self-sufficiency and a powerful instinct for survival. Learn how the land changed with European settlement and how present day pastoralists and park managers are dealing with those changes.

The 30 minute scenic flight takes you slightly further than the 20 minute, and completes a circuit of Wilpena Pound where your pilot will point out the Elder Range, Edeowie Gorge, Heysen Range, Lake Torrens, Bunyeroo Gorge, Brachina Gorge, St Mary Peak and the Pound Gap. You will clearly see how the Flinders Ranges appears to be a backbone on the landscape – an extraordinary sight and great for photographers.

The gorges around Wilpena Pound Resort provide an ancient and fascinating history of the Flinders Ranges, and are visible in the fossil layers and referred to as the ‘Corridor Through Time’. On this tour, you will also learn about Adnyamathanha Dreaming, which is still very strong in traditional Yarta (land).

Explore more than 100 million years of this history as well as marveling at the rugged beauty of Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges. Search for Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies and enjoy sweeping views of Bunyeroo Valley and the eastern wall of Wilpena Pound. Visitors will learn about the rugged mountains including the moss rocks with their contrasting colours and the ever-changing flora of the area, especially after the rain.
