Murray River Trails

Adventure and Outdoors Tours

‘Murray River Trails’ is a pioneering South Australian ecotourism company presenting a carefully crafted range of guided journeys that tell the story of a mighty river’s past, and project its bold innovative future.

Proud Riverland locals and Murray River advocates, Tony and Susie Sharley founded the company in 2016, and it was originally known as ‘Murray River Walk’. A background in river management, wine tourism and eco-tourism created a determination to protect and sustain the area, and to diversify its regional economy following the ‘millennium drought’. This was matched by an unwavering passion to share the wildlife, landscapes, produce, history, culture, and stories of Australia’s greatest river.

Today, Managing Director, Tony, and Marketing Director, Susie, assume hands-on management and guiding duties, alongside full time Operations Manager, Lauren Ward. Lauren, who has grown with the business since inception when she started as a guide, now oversees a team of 8 guides and 5 boat drivers.

Guests are introduced to the Murray River, and the fauna and wildlife that depend on this ecosystem. Each day new topics build on the themes from the previous day, encompassing ‘pioneers and paddle steamers’, ‘locks and weirs’, ‘plants and animals’, ‘geology’, ‘the Murray Darling Basin Plan’, ‘the Chowilla Dam project’, ‘droughts and floods’, and ‘environmental watering’.

Walking and sleeping alongside a mighty river, savouring local produce, encountering diverse flora and fauna, and learning from knowledgeable guides, make this a unique experience.

Murray River Safari is a guided wildlife adventure in remote South Australia, combining the comforts of houseboat accommodation with exclusive access to diverse riverine habitats.

Your guides will lead into different landscapes to discover the diverse wildlife within the Riverland Ramsar Wetland of International Importance where more than 180 endemic bird species have been recorded. You will return to your houseboat for lunch and relaxation before your next field trip.

You’ll encounter marsupial fauna including koalas, possums and kangaroos, spectacular outback lakes teeming with birdlife including migratory species, and the opportunity to see wildlife in its natural habitat.

Guided field trips include river boat cruising, canoeing in tranquil backwaters, a bushwalk through woodlands and cliffs spotting Wedge-tailed Eagles, honeyeaters, parrots and migratory bee-eaters.

A highlight is a visit to the floodplain lakes in a high conservancy area where spectacular birdwatching can include Black swans and their cygnets, Pied Stilts, Red-necked Avocets, Yellow-billed Spoonbills, migratory waders and rarely seen Blue-billed ducks and Musk ducks.

Each night you can sit by a riverbank campfire under the sparkling starlit skies where your lodge style houseboat accommodation is moored. You’ll also be treated to superb local food with a creative native twist.
