The Hindmarsh River Walking Trail

Natural Attractions

This walk takes in a coastal lagoon, rare paperbarks, rive red gums and beautiful scenery with abundant birdlife. There are 5 stages to this walk, ranging from 30 minutes to 3 hours; you can spread it over more than one outing or make it a full day. Remember good walking shoes, suitable clothing, and take drinking water. In summer there may be snakes. There is an excellent Walking Guide available from the Victor Harbor Visitor Information Centre.

The walk starts where the trail crosses the SteamRanger railway line near the Hindmarsh Bridge.
You can park in the turning circle in Bridge Terrace. Go down stairs from the railway line, then downstream to the wetlands, paperbarks and beach. Or, after the stairs cross under Hindmarsh Road through the subway to take the riverside track upstream through redgums, and enjoy the birdlife and scenery.

The Lagoon Trail is from Hindmarsh Road to the beach, say 30 minutes. For some, this is enough.
The more serious walkers enjoy the Paperbark Trail, a loop crossing the school footbridge; allow 30 minutes to an hour. The Waggon Trail is on the north side of the river, an alternative to the Wattle Trail on the south bank. Each is an hour along the river. The McCraken Trail is an hour return, to the McCracken Playground.
