18 Sep 2021 Once Only Event
Organised as part of Papercuts Comics Festival, Artists in Conversation is a discussion between Jason Pamment (SA), whose debut graphic novel Treasure in the Lake is published in the US and Australia this month; Brenton McKenna, Australia’s first indigenous graphic novelist; Safdar Ahmed, a Walkley Award winner whose Still Alive is a non-fiction graphic novel about Australian immigration detention centres; and Ariel Slamet Ries, creator of the award-winning comic Witchy.
Whether your tastes lean towards high fantasy, middle grade adventure or investigative journalism, this panel promises an engaging discussion about the work, careers and techniques of our four guests. With their books receiving praise from the likes of Shaun Tan and Noelle Stevenson, this is a perfect opportunity to learn more about some creators currently reshaping Australian comics.
Safdar will be appearing remotely, as may Ariel and Brenton (dependent on restrictions at the time).
This session will feature sign interpretation in Auslan.
This event is Day 3 of Papercuts Comics Festival (16 to 20 September 2021). For more about the festival’s free events, visit www.papercutscomicsfestival.com.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.
The festival is also supported by Arts South Australia and City of Adelaide. Artists in Conversation is presented in collaboration with the University of Adelaide Department of Media.
