Explore recently digitised photographs in the national archival collection relating to the Commonwealth Railways.
National Archives of Australia has been digitising thousands of photographs from its collection during the past year and many of these relate to the Commonwealth Railways.
Spanning from the early 20th century until the 1960s, these photographs document the building of the Trans-Australian, Central Australia and North Australia Railways and the communities who lived and worked along the line.
These photographs cover a fascinating range of subjects and locations and are much more than locomotives – often the railway has yet to be built when they were taken.
Come and find out more about the project to digitise these photographs, how to access them and some of the highlights within this collection.
