Great Australian pinot has its time to shine in this exploration featuring three leading winemakers who will present brilliant examples of pinot noir loved by critics and consumers alike.
Tasmanian Jim Chatto (Chatto Wines) was Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year 2019 and has more than 25 years of experience, including a stint as chairman of judges for the National Wine Show of Australia. He was the inaugural winemaker for Rosevears Estate in 1998 and became enamoured with the state’s pinot noir. Today his label produces relatively small quantities of just two wines and remains in constant demand.
Ashton Hills winery manager Liam Van Pelt has been tasked by founder Stephen George with continuing to produce the label’s benchmark wines. It’s a task the Adelaide University graduate and Len Evans Tutorial participant has embraced. Three pinot noirs are produced by Ashton Hills in a style that reflects the Adelaide Hills’ strong similarity to Burgundy.
Adam Wadewitz took the chief winemaker reins at Shaw + Smith in 2020. Along with pinot noir the label’s Balhannah and Lenswood vineyards are planted to sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and shiraz, with pinot under its Tolpuddle label also made from grapes grown in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley.
There’s a special magic to be found in the very best pinot noir – join us to enjoy the latest crop of Australian stars.
