Rocky Hills Retreat offers accommodation in Rocky Hills, near Swansea on Tasmania’s East Coast.
Rocky Hills Retreat is a contemporary intimate retreat for one or two people, set high on a hill South of Swansea overlooking the beautiful Great Oyster Bay and Maria Island.
The retreat, designed by award-winning Australian architect Craig Rosevear, is surrounded by 250 acres of Tasmanian bush. It comprises a single open space featuring a luxurious king size bed, a well-equipped kitchen, modern bathroom, laundry facilities and living area with wood fire and gas heating. A custom built Huon pine bath sits outside on the deck and a fully equipped art studio is available just 300 metres away, just waiting for you to draw, paint, or sculpt your own masterpiece.
Delightful breakfast provisions are provided and a fully-stocked mini bar means you don’t have to leave the property. Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own provisions or eat at some of the well-known local restaurants.
Rocky Hills Retreat is a two-hour drive north of Hobart and around the same time south-east of Launceston. Nearby is Freycinet National Park, vineyards, oyster farms to visit or the best strawberries, jams and ice-cream at Kate’s Berry Farm.

The rhythm of the Retreat starts with the ever changing glorious pre-dawn light, sit out on the morning deck to breathe in its full depth. With breakfast provisions provided, you can enjoy muesli with yoghurt, fresh fruit or eggs and bacon if you wish.
If it is cold you could put on the jackets, boots and gloves that are in the laundry and walk up to the art studio. There you will find lots to do – draw, paint, sculpt, knit, read, play. It is endless. Or simply do nothing – just sit.
The beautiful Huon Pine bathtub out on the evening deck smells delightful and holds its warmth for a long time (we have not been out in less than an hour and a half).
Rocky Hills Retreat’s bed will be waiting for you – it is lush – layers of comfort surrounding you.
You could always lift the veil of Rocky Hills Retreat and go back to the other world and visit the delights of Swansea and the Freycinet Peninsula however, it seems as though people just never want to leave.
