Macquarie St. Mosaics

Landmarks and Buildings

You are standing on a ship, in the distance, you spy a lighthouse. Tasmanian wildlife is all around, oh look a thylacine. You could be at sea, or you could be on George Town’s Macquarie street where forty-five mosaics are embedded in the footpath.

The work was commissioned by the George Town District Art Council and designed and directed by local artists Margaret Williams and Mark Hoban.

The mosaics were implemented in 1998 during a series of mosaic workshops with GT young people.
