Depart the Strahan Wharf for Hells Gates, the narrow-channel entrance to Macquarie Harbour, before passing ocean trout and Atlantic salmon farms en route to Sarah Island where an hour-long guided tour conveys a keen appreciation of the harsh conditions at what was Tasmania’s first and perhaps most notorious penal outpost. From Sarah Island travel into the majestic Gordon River, gliding deep into the ancient rainforests of the World Heritage Area to the boardwalk of Heritage Landing. Disembark once again for a stroll through the hushed, lichen-covered rainforest and one of its oldest inhabitants – a 2000-year-old Huon Pine. The whole adventure is completed by engaging live on-board commentary on the area’s human history, ecology and geology – a commentary enriched with anecdotes from the Grining family’s own experiences from more than a century of cruising this famous river.
The buffet luncheon featuring locally grown smoked salmon completes the day and sets the scene for the relaxing journey home.
Seating onboard is allocated with the option of standard, premium or Gold seats. Passengers have access to the entire vessel with additional seating outside to fully enjoy the Gordon River Cruise.
Morning Heritage Cruise departs 0900 and returns 1500 daily.
