On Saturday 2nd December the Tasmanian Yard Dog Association will be holding their annual state championships at the Roberts Saleyards, Powranna. The competition commences at 7:30 am starting with an extensive judge’s address. Competition is run all day until completion at approximately 5pm.
A yard dog trial is a competition in which a dog and handler work as a team and must negotiate sheep through a challenging predetermine course which tests the skill and knowledge of both handler and dog.
Each competitor enters the arena with the maximum 100 points, these points are then deducted as seen fit by the judge over the duration of the course. The judge having earlier specified to competitors how they expect these obstacles to be undertaken with minimal fuss to the stock which in turn equals minimal point deductions. The given time limit for each run is twelve minutes. The Championships are divided up into 3 classes: Novice, Improver and Open. The top scorers in each class then enter a finals run off in which their first score is combined with their final run off score to determine the overall result of places.
