World class sailing is coming to the challenging waters of Bass Strait as the Mersey Yacht Club and Tasmanian District Laser Association host the 2019 Oceania and Australian Laser Sailing Championships.
The Laser is the Olympic single-handed sailing dinghy with the current Olympic Champion, Australia’s Tom Burton, commencing his Gold Medal defence in Devonport.
The Championship is an Olympic qualifying event, with a number of top-ranked Australian and International men and women sailors coming to Devonport. Furthermore, the Championship will be the only Australian qualifying regatta for the 2020 World Laser Sailing Championships being held in Sandringham, Victoria, guaranteeing a top-class field.
With racing being conducted in the Bass Strait, there will be unprecedented spectator vantage from the Mersey Bluff. Coupled with the ample tourism opportunities in the local area, from World Heritage wilderness to stunning local produce and food experiences, the Championships promises to deliver both world class sailing and a unique Tasmanian visitation experience.
Supported by Events Tasmania and the Devonport City Council, the 2019 Oceania and Australian Laser Sailing Championships will be a highlight event of the sporting calendar.
